Mini Cross Stitch Font
The smallest alphabet in the generator: capitals, lowercase and numbers only 3 stitches wide and 5 tall, for lettering that should stay out of the way.
Mini alphabet chart
Capitals, lowercase and numbers at the Small size, where each letter is 5 stitches tall. One square is one full cross stitch, with a bold line every 10 stitches. This is exactly what the text generator produces, including the gap between letters.

Small, Medium and Large
The generator has three stitch sizes. Medium and Large are the same letters with every square doubled or tripled, so the shapes stay identical and simply stitch up bigger. The generator starts at Medium.
| Size | Letter (stitches) | Gap | Height on 14-count | Height on 18-count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 3 wide × 5 tall | 1 | 0.36 in (0.9 cm) | 0.28 in (0.7 cm) |
| Medium | 6 wide × 10 tall | 2 | 0.71 in (1.8 cm) | 0.56 in (1.4 cm) |
| Large | 9 wide × 15 tall | 3 | 1.07 in (2.7 cm) | 0.83 in (2.1 cm) |
How much text fits in a frame
Planning a verse, poem or recipe? These are the characters per line (counting spaces) and the number of lines that fit on 14-count Aida, leaving a 1 in border all round. Allow about six characters for an average word and its space.
| Frame | Small | Medium | Large |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 × 7 in | 10 per line, 10 lines | 5 per line, 5 lines | 3 per line, 3 lines |
| 8 × 10 in | 21 per line, 16 lines | 10 per line, 8 lines | 7 per line, 5 lines |
| 11 × 14 in | 31 per line, 24 lines | 16 per line, 12 lines | 10 per line, 8 lines |
Where Mini works best
Mini is the font for the small print of a project. Initials and a year in the corner of a sampler, the name of a flower under a botanical motif, or the date you finished a piece all fit in a strip only five stitches deep, so they sign the work without competing with it.
It is also the way to fit a long text into a modest frame. At the Small size an 8 × 10 in frame on 14-count holds about 21 characters across and 16 lines, half as many again as Block, which is room for a full verse, a short poem or a favourite recipe.
Stitching Mini
Every letter is three stitches wide, so wide letters are simplified: M, N and W are drawn with single-stitch diagonals, and M and N look similar at a glance. Check a word on the chart before stitching, and if it is full of wide letters, Block at the Small size may read better.
Because the strokes are only one stitch thick, Mini looks best in a thread colour with strong contrast against the fabric, and on 14-count it can be stitched with three strands instead of the usual two for a fuller line.
Stitch your own words in Mini
