Thread per stitch by fabric count (2 strands)
| Fabric | Per stitch | Stitches/skein |
|---|---|---|
| 11ct Aida | 3.2cm / 1.3" | ~740 |
| 14ct Aida | 2.5cm / 1.0" | ~940 |
| 16ct Aida | 2.2cm / 0.9" | ~1,080 |
| 18ct Aida | 2.0cm / 0.8" | ~1,210 |
| 22ct Aida | 1.6cm / 0.6" | ~1,480 |
| 28ct over 2 | 1.3cm / 0.5" | ~1,890 |
How long should I cut my thread?
The standard advice is 18 inches (45cm) per needle length - roughly fingertips to elbow. Longer threads tangle and fray more. Shorter threads mean more re-threading but less frustration. For metallic or speciality threads, cut shorter (12-15 inches) as they fray faster.
Why add a safety margin?
- Starting and ending: Each new thread length loses 2-3cm for anchoring at the start and finishing at the back
- Wastage: Thread tails, mistakes, and unpicking all use thread you can't recover
- Dye lots: If you run out, the replacement skein may be a slightly different shade - better to buy enough upfront
Cross Stitch Thread & Floss Calculator
Working out how much thread you need for cross stitch before you start saves frustrating trips to the craft shop mid-project - and avoids the risk of mismatched dye lots. This cross stitch floss calculator tells you the exact thread length and number of DMC skeins needed for any colour in your pattern.
How the Thread Calculation Works
Each cross stitch uses a length of thread that depends on your fabric count and stitch size. On standard 14ct Aida, each cross stitch uses approximately 2.5cm (1 inch) of thread - this accounts for the two diagonal passes that make up the cross, plus the thread travelling across the back of the fabric. The number of strands affects how many usable lengths you can pull from each skein rather than the path length per stitch.
Lower count fabric like 11ct has larger holes spaced further apart, so each stitch uses more thread - about 3.2cm per stitch. Higher count fabric like 18ct has smaller, closer stitches using only about 2cm each. The calculator adjusts automatically based on your fabric count selection.
How Many Threads for Cross Stitch on 14 Count?
On 14 count Aida, the standard is 2 strands for cross stitches and 1 strand for backstitch. DMC embroidery floss comes as a 6-strand thread that you separate before stitching - pull out 2 strands at a time from your cut length. Separating and recombining the strands (called stripping) gives smoother, flatter stitches than using them directly off the skein.
For other fabric counts: 11ct sometimes uses 3 strands for fuller coverage, 16ct and 18ct typically use 2 strands, and 28ct over 2 threads can use either 2 strands (standard) or 1 strand for a more delicate finish.
DMC Skein Sizes
A standard DMC embroidery floss skein contains 8 metres (8.7 yards) of 6-strand thread. Since you separate the strands before stitching, the usable length depends on how many strands you use - with 2 strands, you can pull 3 bundles from one skein, giving you about 24 metres of usable thread. On 14ct Aida with 2 strands, one skein covers roughly 940 cross stitches. For larger projects or colours that dominate your pattern, you may need multiple skeins - the calculator rounds up and adds a 20% safety margin to account for waste, starting and ending threads, and mistakes.
