This project has been a long time coming! After months of hard work, countless cups of tea, and more than a few late nights, I’ve created something I think you’re going to love – my very own Counted Cross Stitch Grid Paper book!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat down to design a new pattern, full of inspiration and ideas, only to end up frustrated by the limitations of regular graph paper. It just never quite worked right for cross stitch and involved so many calculations to get right (or wrong) that it sapped the life out of any ideas I had!
I remember one particular project – a intricate floral design I was creating for my niece’s nursery. I spent weeks perfecting it on standard graph paper, carefully counting and recounting squares. When I finally started stitching, I realised with dismay that my beautiful design was coming out way too small on the fabric. All that work, and the delicate details I’d planned were lost in tiny, cramped stitches. I was devastated.
That experience (and a few others like it) got me thinking. There had to be a better way to design cross stitch patterns. Something that would take the guesswork out of sizing, make counting easier, and let us focus on the creative part of designing without getting bogged down in calculations.
And that’s how this book was born.
What Makes This Cross Stitch Paper Special
So, what exactly sets this grid paper apart? Let me walk you through the features that I’m most excited about:
14-count grid: Each page has a grid that perfectly matches 14-count Aida cloth. This means what you draw is exactly what you’ll stitch – no more surprises when you transfer your design to fabric!
Numbers every 10 squares: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lost count while designing. These handy number markers make it so much easier to keep track of where you are in your pattern.
Centre dotted line: These lines make finding the centre and stitching the pattern easy but they’re also really handy for making symmetrical designs. It’s so much easier to balance your pattern when you can clearly see the centre.
Large 8.5 x 11 inch pages: These pages give you plenty of room to work. Whether you’re designing a big, complex piece or just sketching out small motifs, you’ve got the space you need.
100 pages: Plenty of pages for all your design ideas!
How This Book Can Help Your Stitching
I’ve been using prototype versions of this book for a while now, and it’s truly transformed my design process. Here are just a few ways I think it could help you too:
Accurate Sizing from the Start
Remember my nursery design disaster? With this grid paper, that would never have happened. Because the grid matches 14-count Aida exactly, what you draw is what you get. No more resizing surprises!
Faster Design Process
The numbered grid lines and center marker save so much time. I used to spend ages counting and recounting to make sure my design was centered or to figure out where to start a new element. Now, it’s quick and easy to keep track of where I am in the design.
More Creative Freedom
Here’s something I didn’t expect – using this paper has actually made me more creative. Because I’m not constantly worrying about calculations and sizing, my mind is free to focus on the design itself. I’ve found myself trying more complex patterns and new techniques because the technical part is so much simpler. It’s easy to get lost in the drawing and makes it so much more enjoyable.
Confidence Boost
For those of you who are new to designing your own patterns, this paper could make a real difference. It takes a lot of the intimidation factor out of creating designs. You can see exactly how your pattern will look on the fabric, which makes it much less daunting to try your hand at design.
My Favorite Ways to Use This Book
Since I started using this grid paper, I’ve found so many fun ways to incorporate it into my stitching. Here are a few of my favourites:
Planning big projects: For large, complex designs, I use several pages taped together. It gives me a great overview of the whole project.
Quick motif sketches: When inspiration strikes, I can quickly sketch out small motifs or borders. It’s perfect for little doodles and when you need something to fill a space or customise a design.
Customising patterns: Sometimes I’ll take an existing pattern and use the grid paper to add my own twist – maybe changing the border or adding some personalised elements.
Cross Stitch Lettering: Making cross stitch quote designs is so much simpler and enjoyable with this grid. Being able to space out the letters is really useful and adding scripts is something I’ve really enjoyed. It’s so simple to sketch out the letters and then fill out the squares to bring life to the design.
Teaching tool: When I’m helping newer stitchers learn to design, this paper makes it so much easier to explain concepts like centring and sizing.
A Little Something for Everyone
Whether you’re a seasoned designer or someone who’s never created their own pattern before, I truly believe this book has something to offer you. For experienced stitchers, it streamlines the design process and gives you a reliable tool for bringing your ideas to life. For beginners, it provides a safe, easy-to-understand space to start exploring pattern creation.
I’ve even found it useful for non-design tasks. Sometimes I use it to plan out my stitching schedule, using the grid to create little calendars. Other times, I’ve used it to chart out color schemes, taking advantage of the grid to create little sample swatches.
The Joy of Creating
There’s something really special about stitching a design you’ve created yourself. It adds an extra layer of personalisation and pride to your work. My hope is that this grid paper book will encourage more of you to try your hand at designing.
Maybe you’ll start small, just altering existing patterns a bit. Or perhaps you’ll dive right in and create a complex, wholly original piece. Whatever your style, this book is here to support your creative journey.
Looking Forward
I’m so excited to see what you all create with this new tool. Please, if you use the book to create a pattern, I’d love to see it! I plan to add 16 and 18 count versions shortly too so watch this space.
In Conclusion
Bringing this grid paper book to life has been a bit of a labour of love, born out of my own struggles and inspired by the amazing community of stitchers I’m privileged to be part of. My hope is that it will make your stitching journey a little easier and a lot more enjoyable.
So, are you ready to let your creativity run wild? Grab your favorite pen or pencil, settle into your stitching nook, and let’s see what beautiful designs you can create. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
With love and lots of x’s, Ellie 😉
